Paano nga ba nagsimula yang tatak sa kaliwang kamay natin ?
It began when an amuyong, upon orders of his master, planted a kiss on the cheek of a Sigma Betan.
It was a kiss that launched thousands of burn marks.

The order that the amuyong got was the hardest dilemma any neophyte, of whatever era, could ever face.
He obeys his master and he runs afoul of the fraternity’s unbreakable canon to treat women with respect. He disobeys him and he breaks the cardinal rule that the master is always right.
In the UPLB Chapter’s Year 60 “Book of Brotherhood,” UP Diliman Brod Lito Tadena , recalled the events that birthed that practice.
“The tradition of ‘scarring’ started with the Diliman Batch ’60 – batchmates include Boy Morales, Johnny Chiuten, Erwin Castillo. It was a reaction to what one of the neophytes ,Eddie Baguio, did at that time. And his batchmates had to suffer the same punishment.
“Ed was asked by a master to kiss a Sigma Betan…The expected action of the neophyte would have been to disobey the order of the master. But at the risk of being beaten up for disobedience, the slave kissed the Sigma Betan.
“Out of respect for the Sis, the brods got mad for the ‘presco’ behavior of the neophyte. They were so mad that they all extinguished their cigarettes at the place between the thumb and pointing finger of all neophytes. This became the Betan Scar.
“We were the next batch ( ’61 A) and it was decided during the final rites that the scarring becomes part of the ritual. I cannot recall now if it was done before or after the gauntlet. But I recall that we did the ‘scarring’ ourselves.
“The reason why it was done towards the end was to ensure that only those who passed the initiation process ger the scar. “
And thus the Beta Sigma trademark was born
Brod Lito Tadena passed away during the pandemic, but only after steering Santo Domingo, Ilocos Sur to progress as mayor, employing the same skill that won him respect as CEO of a pharmaceutical giant.
Brod Boy Morales would become DAR secretary, chalking up a career that saw him made a principled detour to the armed underground and Marcos prison.

And Brod Erwin Castillo is the greatest living Filipino fictionist, the creative genius behind those FPJ San Miguel TV commercials, that Esquire magazine, known for featuring supermodels, honored him by putting his ruggedly handsome face on the cover.
Judging by its origin and evolution, the Betan “tatak” packs layers of meaning.
Meant as a brand of punishment, those who first got it instead embraced it as an icon of solidarity , of their shared past of “sacrifice, sweat and blood” tears and a common future of “sympathy, understanding, friendship and equality.”

Recalled Central Mindanao University Brod Bing de la Cruz : “ Sa kanan, tallong stick ng Marlboro , how can I forget. May gin kasi cold December weather na sa Musuan, Bukidnon. Sila Brods Edwin Villarina, Edo Penarada and pumaso.”
Kahit naging paring Katoliko si Brod Father Bing, Beta Sigman pa rin, kaya sa isang pagtitipon ng mga brods mga dalawang dekada na ang nakaraan, may pinasuan sya na bagong brod na taga-Fatima, kwento ng eyewitness na si Brod Doc Oca Escudero

Often the “precious hand” is the subject of a bidding war, reckoned by the number of cases of beer. Pero sa isang jug, may Dekada 80 na brod, who put his right hand on the auction bloc. Dalawang Hibiki at dalawang Glenlivet ang naging kapalit.

Brod Andy’s batchmate, Brod Paiboon Maraprygsavan got his a year after their Mt Balante Batch saw the light in 1985. Brod Paiboom rose to the rank of Major General in the Royal Thai Police Force.
Si UP Brod Jig Reyes, an IT guru and whose Big Bird-Freddie Mercury cosplay get-up never fails to bring the house down, managed to evade being branded for three years. “ Perong nang tinawag na ako na ‘Lovelle’, our term of endearment sa mga sis, nagpapaso na ako in 1990, kay UP Brod Owl Balmores”
Ganyang biruan din ang nag-udyok kay New Jersey-based Mapua Brod Roni Laya na magpatatak. “Nagkainitan kami ng isang brod nang kinakantyawan nya ako kung bakit wala pa akong paso. Kaya sa bahay ni Mapua Professor Brod Robert Magat natatakan ako, over four cases of beer , around the time na binaril si Ninoy in 1983.”
Kung mga brods ang nagpaso sa kapwa brods, ibahin nyo si PCCR Brod Willy del Castillo, a veterinarian with the QC government. Pinaso nya sarili nya.
“Nag-pass-out kasi ako ng finals namin nila ni Brod Rector Gallineto and the rest of Voltes 11 in August 4, 1979 sa bundok sa Taytay, Rizal. Napaso sila sa bahay ni Brod Joey Bautista. Pag-uwi ko pinaso ko sarili ko. Proud akong pumunta sa tambayan. Walang tao. Yun pala may rumble na kami. At iba otso sa PCCR. Beta Sigma vs All.”
Kung si Brod Doc Willy, rumble ang dinatnan, si UE Brod Josh Sy naman muntik ng mapaaway on the first day he attended school sporting the fresh Betan mark.
“Sunday night, Oct. 3, 2004 natatakan. Following day, Monday, napansin ng seatmate ko na matandang pangit ang osap ko. Ito dayalog naming:
“Tigs : Classmate, ano yan paso mo ? Beta Sigma ka ?
“Me : Oo, Beta Sigma ako.
“Tigs : “Beta Sigma pala ito oh,” sabi nya sa katabi nya. “Eh Apo ako”
“Me: Beta Sigma ako.”
“Five times na back and forth. Buti na lang pumasok professor. Kundi first day as Tabets, otso na ako.”
The practice of delayed branding, to hide assets, was employed as a war tactic by many chapters.
Brod VG Calo, a banker, current VP of large bank, and who has given many brods their first job, attests to this. “ If you have a burn, you got burned. Identity mo exposed na ng mga kalaban.”
But there’s a brod who got his tatak long before he became a full-fledged Beta Sigman,Brod Eric Reyes of PCU, and to make matters worse, the burn was done in installment over a year.
“When I was at the midpoint of being a neophyte San Beda Brod Chee Pelaez, who was studying in PCU then, gave me a little burn on my left hand, the size of 5-centavo coin. Later, several of my masters, out of envy, followed suit, and the burn mark grew, to the size of a 25-centavo coin.
“Two months as a slave became four months, four months became six months, six months raced to ten months and finally on the 12th month was Hell Day or two Hell Days.”
In the late 70s to late 80s , the ten-centavo coin that singed Brod Eric’s hand served as the minimum size guide. Ito ang recollection ni Brod Bensaudz Tulawie, two- term Sulu congressman :
“Sometime in October 1979 sa boarding house ni Brod Toto Mallonga sa likod ng UST, ginamit outline ng diyes sentimo sa guide . Present sila ni Brods Ilde Lee, Dodit Perez. Hawak ko bote ng beer, kaya banat na banat and balat. Hindi yosi ang ginamit. Medicinal marijuana ! ”
Imagine the scene : High na mga brods, hilaw pa ang balat.
Later on, ang 10-centavo size, naging 25-centavo size marks. By mid-80s may mga brods, na ang paso sinlaki ng 50-centavo then. But they were pygmies compared to the big osaps new gen brods sport today
Some brods got their paso after they have left school, and when they came back for a visit, which soon became a homecoming treat.
GAUF Brod Boy del Castillo, left college in 1967, and he got his tatak when he made a visit to the tambayan a couple of years later, a fate he did not escape despite him picking the tab of the marathon jug.
Yung mga anniversaries naging occasion for mass branding exercises. On the sidelines you will see brods dapper in suits, hunched over the hand of usually a bunso, with the burning tip of a yosi being dabbed on the tatak’s customary site.
Fatima Brod Doctor Nat Villanueva received his during PCCR’s anniversary in 2005.
Those sporting tataks on both hands remain a minority.
For UP Baguio Brod Ying Palafox, current DAR Assistant Secretary, said he decided to get one on his right hand sometime in 1988 “to reaffirm my loyalty to the frat. Sila ni UP Brods Bembem Lagasca, Berns Palang, Lito Leano, Dennis Belmonte ang tumira.”
Tulad ng karanasan ni Brod Ying, kadalasan multiple brods ang nagpaso, some sort of a lighted torch relay, kasi hindi kaya ng isang brod lang tapusin ang isang prosesong mahaba.
For FEU Arts Erik de Castro, retired Reuters chief photographer, “sponsor ko na si Brod Edmund Callang at isang katerbang mga brods ang sumunog.”
That’s the experience too of TIP Brod Glenn Carmona, now a Madrid based jefe de cusina, who got his through the boodle version of scarring, with brods from many chapters present, in his case, in the house of NU Brod Rocky San Juan, a renowned student leader, sometime in 1987.
Venues of that rite of passage vary too.

For CLSU Brod Max Caro it was during a rodeo practice in Carranglan, Nueva Ecija. Wrangling cattle and joining Beta Sigma were the grueling stress tests which prepared him for the PMA. He retired with distinction as Major General
But Brod Colonel Benjie Arriola’s tatak became a lightning rod for punishment when he was a plebe at the PNPA.
“Tinatakan ako ni Brod Dennis Fito, future fiscal, na kaklase ko sa law school . Ayaw ko muna sana kasi papasok ako sa PNP or military. Pero sabi nya sa akin this is also a symbol of our shared misery as law students. Talagang symbol of misery kasi kinuryente yang tatak ng nasa academy ako, “ the incumbent Zambales PNP provincial director recalls with a chortle.
Hindi rin parati inumin ang kapalit ng osap. Betan shirts, Malmon items are also convincing inducements. Inofferan ni DLSAU Brod Adler Macabalitao si Brod Jake Chua, na isang hayop na duktor ng mga hayop na ngayon, ng head-to-toe Betan hoodie, shirts, shorts, at socks, at parang pusang maamo inabot agad nya ang kanyang kamay. Kamay ni Brod Jake pala ang nasa picture sa taas.
As the fog of time creeps, the memories of brods on when and where they got their Betan trademark become shrouded by what is called a happy mist.
